*VIRB Edit is free but requires a Garmin VIRB camera or Garmin account.
What Each Tool Is For
Cyclemetry
Open-source desktop app built specifically for cyclists. Creates professional telemetry overlays synced to your ride footage. Uses standard GPX files from any cycling computer or app.
Garmin VIRB Edit
Garmin’s own editing software. Tightly integrated with the Garmin ecosystem — cameras, watches, and GPS devices. Good if you’re already deep in Garmin, but limited if you use another brand.
GoPro Telemetry Extractor
Extracts telemetry from GoPro’s GPMF format and overlays it onto your footage. Powerful for GoPro users, but locked to GoPro’s proprietary format. No GPX support.
DashWare
Automotive-focused telemetry logging software. Built for motorsport and car data (boost, RPM, oil temp, etc.). Discontinued — the company no longer develops or supports it. May not work on modern systems due to age and incompatibility. Not designed for cycling, with no map rendering or elevation profiles.
Telemetry Overlay
Professional overlay software with wide compatibility for action cameras, Garmin devices, and even phone-based GPS. Offers full access to all telemetry data (gyro, GPS, compass, IMU), complete customization of gauges/layouts, and dynamic map overlays. Supports multiple data sources — camera, phone, drone, GPS logger. Designed and maintained by a single developer; widely regarded as strong value for the depth of options and customization.
RaceRender
Good software built mainly for track days and car racing. Not much available for other sports, and quite limited in customization. No longer actively maintained — the owner is looking for a programmer to release a long-awaited update. Does not support newer cameras (e.g., GoPro Hero13). Some users extract data with third-party tools and feed it into RaceRender manually.
GPXrender
Creates a nice overlay video that can be imported into DaVinci Resolve for further editing. One of the few tools that produces a standalone overlay track rather than burning into footage. Around €39.
gpx2video
Open source tool that converts GPX data into video overlays. Supports most action cameras. Good for users who want a free, transparent, community-driven option. Currently Linux-focused.
GoPro Quik App
GoPro’s official app offers basic GPS telemetry stickers (only 4 basic options, not counting the GoPro logo or path sticker). GoPro has repeatedly stated that GPS is not a priority for them, so updating GPS stickers is not a priority either. At ~$30 with a GoPro subscription (which also includes unlimited cloud storage and accessory discounts), it’s the cheapest option for GoPro users — but very limited in what you can customize.
Why GPX Matters
GPX is the universal standard for cycling data. Every cycling computer and app — Garmin, Wahoo, Strava, RideWithGPS, Komoot — exports GPX.
Tools that lock you into a proprietary format (GoPro’s GPMF, Garmin’s ecosystem, DashWare’s format) limit what devices and apps you can use. With Cyclemetry, you’re free to switch devices, apps, or platforms without losing your workflow.
